THE DEVELOPMENT OF EVALUATIVE RESPONSES TO MUSIC: Infants Prefer To Listen To Consonance Over Dissonance
نویسندگان
چکیده
In Experiment 1, &month-old infants looked longer in order to listen to a set of consonant intervals than to a set of dissonant intervals. In Experiment 2, infants preferred to listen to the original version of a Mozart minuet than to a version altered to contain many dissonant intervals. Thus, although infants do not yet have the musical-system-specific knowledge of scale structure that is involved in adults’ emotional reactions to music, infants are similar to adults in their evaluative reactions to consonance and dissonance.

Infants’ Perception of Consonance and Dissonance in Music
The origins of the perception of consonance and dissonance in music are a matter of debate. The present study examined the hypothesis of an innate preferential bias favoring consonance over dissonance by exposing 4 month old infants to consonant and dissonant versions of two melodies. Infants looked significantly longer at the source of sound and were less motorically active to consonant compar...
متن کاملAuditory-nerve responses predict pitch attributes related to musical consonance-dissonance for normal and impaired hearing.
Human listeners prefer consonant over dissonant musical intervals and the perceived contrast between these classes is reduced with cochlear hearing loss. Population-level activity of normal and impaired model auditory-nerve (AN) fibers was examined to determine (1) if peripheral auditory neurons exhibit correlates of consonance and dissonance and (2) if the reduced perceptual difference between...
متن کاملPreference for Sensory Consonance in 2- and 4-Month-Old Infants
The preferences of 2and 4-month-old infants for consonant versus dissonant two-tone intervals was tested by using a looking-time preference procedure. Infants of both ages preferred to listen to consonant over dissonant intervals and found it difficult to recover interest after a sequence of dissonant trials. Thus, sensitivity to consonance and dissonance is found before knowledge of scale stru...
متن کاملCortical deafness to dissonance.
Ordinary listeners, including infants, easily distinguish consonant from dissonant pitch combinations and consider the former more pleasant than the latter. The preference for consonance over dissonance was tested in a patient, I.R., who suffers from music perception and memory disorders as a result of bilateral lesions to the auditory cortex. In Experiment 1, I.R. was found to be unable to dis...

This paper explores the concepts of metrical consonance and dissonance in a broad and yet articulate way. Krebs first gives a brief review of previously studies. He then extends the definition by Yeston to combine the concepts of levels of motion and musical meter to define metrical consonance and dissonance. Another modification of Yeston’s work is extending the applicable range of dissonance ...
